REVIEW: Laidback Luke & Swanky Tunes at Pacha NYC 3/31/12

So Laidback Luke and Swanky Tunes come to Pacha NYC and those of you who were man (or woman) enough to stay awake for the entire show got your money’s worth ($10?!) and a whole lot more. Coming off an unbelievable set at Ultra and having arrived at Pacha straight from Terminal 5, LL showed no signs of fatigue.  He started it off right with “A Million Voices” and “Who’s Wearing the Cap”, and soon to follow was “Greyhound“, which officially blew half of the roof off Pacha (Luke was generous and left the other half of the roof to be blown off by Swanky Tunes when they played the very same “Greyhound” a mere 2 hours later). Just when you thought you couldn’t listen to “Dirty Talk” anymore without cringing at flashbacks of overcrowded high school house parties, Laidback Luke decides to mash it up with “No Beef“, thus transforming Pacha NYC into the McDonalds located in central Harlem; providing the “Dirty Beef” that no one can seem to resist.  A Laidback Luke performance wouldn’t be complete without “Show Me Love” and “Timebomb” to remind us that there are just some songs we will NEVER get tired of.  Despite all of these (ticking ticking) timeless wonders, my highlight was a new track that was first previewed at Ultra: “1, 2, 3, 4” by Laidback Luke,  featuring rapid counting skillz by Chuckie and God knows what from Martin Solveig. The tracks carries a “Turbulent” energy, so strap yourself in.

Then the clock strikes 4:30 AM, and the weaker souls run along home to brush their teeth and count sheep. This created just enough space for the intelligent masses to rage even harder to Swanky Tunes.  They wasted no time by “Sending My Love” and from there, the rest of the set can be found in the “Favorites” section of your iTunes library. “Calling”? “Kick Out The Epic (Vocal Mix, obvs)“?  ”Greyhound“? (True: One can never play Greyhound too many times in one night), “Raise Your Head“?  ”Antidote”? “In My Mind“?  ”In the Air”? Coming Home/Quasar/Aerodynamic mashup?  I think you get it by now.  Despite this compilation of bangers, Swanky found ways to caress our pounding hearts with “Titanium (Alesso Remix)”,  ”Otherside (Third Party Remix), Beating of My Heart (Matisse & Sadko Remix), and “Somebody That I Used to Know (Tiesto Remix)“.  They thanked those ardent and tireless souls who made it until the end of the set with Hardwell’s soulful and creative mashup of “Forever Young” with Swanky’s own “XoXo”
Walking out of Pacha into broad daylight = successful night.  Thanks LL and Swanky for changing my bedtime to 9 AM.
